Restaurant Review: DJ's Clam Shack, Wantagh, New York

DJ’s Clam Shack

Restaurant Review

This week we had a little taste of Key West in Long Island at a small seafood joint in Wantagh, New York. DJ’s Clam Shack is known for “Where Northern and Southern Seafood Meet” and we could not agree more. The extensive menu included all of our pescatarian favorites and unique spins on common dishes. If you are a pescatarian or a seafood lover like us, then we can promise you will love DJ’s.

Our menu for the night included Lobster Bisque, New England Clam Chowder, Kung Pow Calamari, Lobster and Cheese Empanadas, Garlic Steamed Little Neck Clams, Conch Fritters, Garlic Shrimp Scampi Roll, Hot Lobster Roll, Cold Lobster Roll, Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos, Blackened Mahi Mahi Tacos, Sweet Potato Fries with Maple Mayo, and Onion Rings with Cowboy Sauce, and to top it all off with dessert; a key lime pie tart. Yes, we tried it ALL and yes we LOVED it all. Everything we tried was full of flavor and cooked just right, but we were narrow down our favorites!

Leah’s Favorites

My favorite dishes on the menu included the Garlic Shrimp Scampi Roll and the Kung Pow Calamari. I loved how the restaurant put a unique yet subtle spin on typical seafood dishes. Swapping the typical Lobster Roll for Shrimp Scampi was a great idea. This shrimp was fresh and full of flavor, and the bun was perfectly buttered. I would definitely go back for this roll…. and lets not to forget the delicious sweet potato fries with a maple mayo… YUM! I am not a huge fan of the typical calamari with marinara sauce, so whenever I see a different flavor, I always try it out. The Kung Pow sauce was a delicious spicy Asian flare that I could not stop eating. I highly recommend these two dishes for seafood lovers like me.

Jessica’s Favorites

My favorites were the Hot Lobster Roll and the Lobster and Cheese Empanadas. I usually like cold lobster rolls but the hot buttered lobster roll was my favorite. It was loaded with fresh chunks of lobster meat and filled with a ton of flavor. The bus was also perfectly soft and toasted on the outside. The lobster empanadas were my favorite because they were a unique twist on a classic which is usually only made with beef or other meats. They were also filled with plenty of lobster meat and the dough was crunchy and flavorful.

Thank you to DJ’s Clam Shack’s talented and friendly team for cooking up some amazing food. And thank you to Little Kitchen, the mom and pop bakeshop around the corner who provided the delicious Key Lime pies - be sure to check them out when you’re craving something sweet after your seafood dinner.
